Renganathan Shankar
Shankar began his practice in 1996, He chambered in B Rao & KS Rajah where the firm was acting for many insurance companies. He then went to Tang & Partners where he advised mainly insurance companies.
Shankar acts for clients in both workmen compensation before the Ministry of Manpower as well as for common law claims filed in the Civil Courts. He has also acted for clients in subrogated matters.
He also specialises in injuries related to occupiers' and premise liability. Recently Shankar had represented a child who patronized a fast food giant wherein the child was injured in the premise of the fast food giant outlet. He had further acted for claimants in taking action against occupiers where there were engineering defects as well as architectural or design defects. Mr. Shankar had also advised our foreign plaintiffs/claimants who suffer injuries in Singapore but are ordinarily resident outside our jurisdiction.
Shankar had also advised a huge US conglomerate and a huge government linked
company on the due diligence of environmental laws in Singapore which includes
various statutory regulations. With the change taking place in Singapore
in its ratification of the Kyoto Protocol and Singapore's arrangement as
seen in the USSFTA agreement, the safety and environmental aspects in workplace
becomes crucial.
Apart from insurance, Shankar has experience in the general civil litigation
work like debt recovery, enforcement and insolvency. He has also helped
clients in cases where there was negligence realisation of assets which
was against the clients' interest.
Shankar had also acted for a client through their associate office in KL, Malaysia. The client who was resident in Malaysia was sued by a broking house in Singapore for trading losses in the stock market of Malaysia. The dispute centered on the bye-laws of the then SES rule and the KLSE bylaws in relation to settlement period and the contract notes which dealt with the transactions which differed from the terms and conditions of the local broking house.
Shankar is also able to converse in all four languages. He speaks Mandarin
and Malay. He also converses in Tamil to cater to the Indian market. With
his Mandarin background, the firm established the China Desk to service
its' P.R.C and Taiwanese clients. Due to his knowledge of Malay, the Indonesian
and Malay market is also not neglected. Shankar had advised his Indonesian
clients on various occasions. Due to his multi-lingual abilities, Shankar
has proven to be versatile in this region and North East Asia. The ability
to converse in Mandarin had also helped in cordial relationships with the
PRC. Together with the China desk, Mr. Shankar maintains a great link between
our nation and the clients from PRC and the latters decision to use Singapore
as a spring board to penetrate into the SEA market.
